The honest version

Beautiful. Worth it. Not always glamorous.

You'll find plenty of people selling you the sunset. Here's the dream, the ordinary Tuesday, and the plan, for the situation you're actually in.

Pick your situation

Your move, three ways.

The dream is why you'll go. The Tuesday is what you'll live. The plan is how you get from one to the other without losing a year.

M

The single mom

One parent, one or more kids, one income, and every decision on your shoulders.

The dream

Your child walks to school. The neighborhood knows their name. You stop doing the math on whether you can afford for them to get sick. Weekends are the beach, not the second job.

The Tuesday

You're the only adult at every counter: the school, the health center, the bank. Your child cries about Portuguese for a few weeks, then corrects your accent. If the other parent has custody rights, the move needs their written consent or a court order first, and consulates ask.

The plan

Sort custody paperwork before anything else. Pick the school before the apartment, because the school decides the neighborhood. Register at the health center in landing week. Build a two-person backup list in your first month.

Means calculator

The number Portugal will hold you to.

Most people guess high, and talk themselves out of it. Portugal ties the income it expects to its national minimum wage, using published household percentages. Here's your household.

1
0
How it's worked out. Passive-income route: 100% of the minimum wage for the main applicant, 50% for each additional adult, 30% for each child, under Portaria 1563/2007. Remote-work route (D9, often mislabeled D8): four times the minimum wage for the main applicant. Uses the 2026 minimum wage of €920. Dollar figure is approximate. Consulates usually want to see twelve months of this in savings or proven income. Verify against your consulate's checklist.

Passive income route (D7), per month

€920

About $994 a month, or €11,040 across twelve months.

Remote work route (D9), main applicant

€3,680

This is the floor the paperwork checks, not what life costs. Rent depends hugely on the city.

Things nobody tells you

Twelve small truths from my first years.

Bureaucracy

The order matters more than the effort

Tax number, then bank, then lease, then everything else. Do them out of order and you'll do them twice.

Homes

Winter is indoors, and indoors is cold

Ask about heating, windows and damp before you sign anything. A dehumidifier is not optional.

Language

Your kids will pass you in months

Then they'll correct your accent at the bakery. Take the lessons anyway. The pharmacy will thank you.

Time

Everything closes, and that's the point

Holidays mean closed, Sundays are slow, lunch is long. It's maddening for a month and then it's the thing you came for.

Appointments

Bring every document. Then copies.

The one paper you left at home is the one they'll ask for. Keep a folder, in order, every time.

Friendship

It takes longer than you hope

Community is the part you build on purpose. Go to the same place, at the same time, until they know your name.

Money

The move costs more than the month

Apostilles, translations, flights, deposits and furniture land before your first rent. Budget them separately.

Food

Order the house wine

Vinho da casa is usually the smartest thing on the menu. So is the prato do dia at lunch.

Healthcare

Register at the health center early

Do it in landing week, before anyone gets sick. Most people also keep private insurance.

Being Black and American

Easier than you expect, in some ways

And not in others. I write about the conversations nobody writes down, told straight, in the Sunday letter.

Legacy

Your US paperwork doesn't move itself

Wills, trusts, beneficiaries and powers of attorney all need a look once you live abroad.

You

You'll still be you

Portugal doesn't fix everything. It gives you room. What you build in that room is up to you.

Still with me?

The honest version didn't scare you off. Good.

That usually means you're closer than you think. Here's the next step most people in your position take.
